The amazing thing about design is that it can be so broad. There can be thousands, maybe millions of ways to design something and each design can evoke different ideas and thoughts. Movie posters are a great way of showing this – a film usually comprises multiple characters, plot points, scenes and settings and so – when you’re designing a movie poster – there’s almost a limitless number of directions you can go in. You could focus on one scene in particular, or on one character or try to encompass the entire mood of the film in one striking, visual image. That’s why it’s so interesting to see how different designers would approach creating a film poster.

Because of the lack of focus and the ability to go in any direction, it can be incredibly challenging to design a film poster (especially at first when you’re facing a blank canvas). To help show off how other people have approached this problem, and to give you some inspiration for any poster design projects that you’re working on, we’ve brought together a showcase of beautifully creative, stylish and stunningly designed reimagined movie posters.

We've brought together a collection of inspiring, brilliantly designed and creative album artwork that captures the mood of the music and the personality of the band beautifully.

Album artwork can be the most challenging, exciting and rewarding work you ever do. The difference between designing for a company and designing for a band or music artist is staggering. When you’re designing the cover art for an album, you need to sum up the feel and style of the music and of the band – and there are no set rules for how you go about this. While it can be extremely liberating designing without any constraints at all, it can also be remarkably challenging as you have a blank canvas and, at first, no real idea of how to fill it.

There are a huge number of styles, techniques and methods that you can use to bring the album artwork together – from the choice of colour palette to the typography – and in many cases you have to use your intuition to guide you to create an album cover that’s memorable, remarkable and a good fit.

We’ve brought together a collection of inspiring, brilliantly designed and creative album artwork that captures the mood of the music and the personality of the band beautifully. We hope you find this collection useful for your next album artwork design project.

We’ve put together a stunning showcase of print ads,
to demonstrate that ‘selling out’ can sometimes prove to be very aesthetically and intellectually rewarding.

The success of ‘Mad Men’ over the last few years has meant lots of people view advertising in a very different way. Not only do we now appreciate ads as a sort of art form but we appreciate how far they’ve come over the decades.

Oh yes – big ideas, stunning visuals and striking wordplay are par for the course on billboards and print ads these days, so it’s about time we recognised the work, creativity and ground-breaking design skills that go into them. To that end we’ve put together a stunning showcase of print ads, to demonstrate that ‘selling out’ can sometimes prove to be very aesthetically and intellectually rewarding…

Nexcare

Harking back to Nirvana’s iconic Nevermind album cover, this tranquil yet kinetic ad for Nexcare bandages uses water to create a striking visual. The water somehow communicates ideas of freedom of movement, as well as a sense of protection. As such it’s ideal for a healthcare product. This globally translatable concept comes from agency Grey 141, who are based in São Paulo, Brazil.

Ziploc

The idea behind this cling wrap ad is simple. Freshness is the key benefit of using Ziploc and so a clean ‘before and after’ principle has been employed by the Beijing agency, Strange Idea Ad, who created the ad. Bold colours and shapes make the piece eye-catching and give the subject room to breathe. The use of space also adds a sense of hygiene to the composition, which is always important when it comes to dealing with foodstuffs.

Coca Cola

It isn’t just small, dynamic brands who take risks with visually creative ads. Here Coca Cola decided to highlight Planet Day with this striking depiction of nature and destruction. The use of rippled water, fleeing birds and a flaming ball of what looks like lava, taps into the raw power of nature. Arguably though it paints what is perhaps the world’s most famous soft drink as the source of destruction, as it is from the bottle that the flames explode.

The Walrus

This Canadian ad elegantly demonstrates that effective print ads don’t always have to focus on imagery over text. Closer inspection of the copy reveals a witty tone that sings the praises of quality journalism – namely The Walrus magazine – over ‘magazines that offer 16 exercises for a flatter stomach’. It also uses overt reverse psychology to undermine the assumptions of the reader and encourage them to continue to read. The text manages to carve this brand a dignified niche amongst more trashy magazines and the heavy use of text over frothy pictures compliments and reflects their ethos very effectively.

Lumix

This eye-catching print ad is all about delivering a point of view. It places the viewer in the place of the person in the ad, who can be seen (or their feet can at any rate) riding on the back of a whale. The strap ‘Welcome to the front row’ describes the supposedly all-consuming experience of using this camera. Meanwhile the fact that only parts of the whales can be seen mid-action gives it an exciting kind of energy.

Sonik Sports

The fantastical nature of this ad makes it aspirational, while perfectly capturing the tranquility of the sport to which it relates. The kingfisher and fishing have a natural tie and by directly and colourfully linking the fisherman with nature, it encourages them to think that this equipment could help to take them one step closer to being nature’s perfect predator. The seamless connection between the man’s body and the bird’s head also makes it visually arresting and the flawless finish of the graphic suggests that this is a premium brand.

Avis

This knowing ad for Avis uses humour to great effect. It also employs the kind of gratuitous car shots that automobile fans will go gaga for. The gag of course is that people attending their school reunion have hired luxury cars to impress their former classmates. This does not become clear until you see the tag in the bottom right hand corner, simply ‘Luxury car rental’. This ad is the master of the understatement.s.

Beijing Sports Radio

This concise ad for Beijing Sports Radio demonstrates how the most simple of ideas can have a really big impact. By taking an instantly recognisable visual – that of a boxing ring in this instance – and making one slight adjustment, the image becomes jarring to the viewer, who is forced to question why that is. Here the ring is transformed into a speech bubble, translating the fact that this sports radio station brings you all the action through no more than speech.

Australian Defense Force

This unapologetically epic ad is essentially a modern day military propaganda piece, playing up the power of the Australian Defense Force by employing the sheer scale of the elements and the unharnessed power of nature. As a viewer of the ad you’d be reassured by this as an image of your country’s defense and potentially revved up enough to enlist. This is a team you’d want to be on. The use of the helicopter in the foreground lends scale to the enormous power behind it, whereby the stampeding bulls serve as an impressive metaphor.

Google

As you’d expect from Google, this ad combines playfulness with intelligence and flawless execution. The viewer is left to work out that instead of ‘battleship’, ‘battlesheep’ may have been typed into the search engine, which gives them a sense of satisfaction as well as engagement. But beyond the irreverent sense of humour, the dramatic imagery of a sheep in a war-zone is impressively convincing and atmospheric in its absurdity.

When you're designing a poster there is always constraints.
Here is a collection of posters that are both effective and at the same time undeniably beautiful.

When you’re designing a poster there is always constraints. Corporate colour palettes to follow, essential information to communicate and brand personality are all defining elements which you have to bear in mind. That is not to say that your creativity should be held back. Here is a collection of posters that are both effective and at the same time undeniably beautiful. Whether it’s through the use of colour, illustration, spatial awareness or iconography, this selection of creatively conceptualised posters are a source of inspiration to all – whether you keep them purely for reference or decide to showcase them on your wall.

Deerhoof

Jason Munn is a hugely respected designer known for his creative gig posters for bands such as Death Cab for Cutie, Camera Obscura and Best Coast. Here we see an example of his work for the group Deerhoof, displaying stunning use of overlaid colours, impeccable shade selection and a keen eye for iconic type.

Simplicity is the Key to Successful Living

This gorgeous example by Nick Dewar for ReadyMade draws heavily on the iconic, populist poster art of the 1930s. Best known for his cover design for the novel The Devil Wears Prada, Dewar sadly passed away in 2010, leaving a legacy of stunning designs and beautifully colourful illustration.

Lufthansa Europa Jet

This poster by Otl Aicher proves that beautiful doesn’t necessarily mean busy. In an attempt to display man-made beauty, the poster exemplifies the art-deco fascination with the machine perfectly. Bold choice yet restrained use of colour, effortlessly elegant imagery and impeccable balance make this an unforgettably powerful, intimidating and incredibly handsome creative example.

Progress

Rich in colour and detail, this stunning example is by designer Scott Hansen. Produced for the Obama presidential campaign, it features an unrestrained colour palette that in less experienced hands could prove overwhelming. Instead, through smart placement, Hansen creates harmony within the design that inspires a sense of emotion and community.

Batman Begins

In complete contrast, this example by Kuala Lumpur-based designer Marcus, shows just how beautiful monochrome can be. Based on the movie Batman Begins, the fluid silhouette of the hero, combined with the outline of the birds – which seem to grow from his cloak – is simply stunning.

Coca Cola

This retro poster for Coca Cola uses muted colours and imagery to take you back to the good old days of its 1950s popularity peak. It’s iconic, eye catching and simultaneously gentle; encapsulating an era with a few choice design designs.

Peace Corps

Shepard Fairey is a world renowned artist whose work graces the walls of the National Gallery in Washington DC. His posters contains a distinctly Marxist style, along with elements of graffiti, pop art and appropriation art. These themes can clearly be seen in this poster, created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Peace Corps.

Circa Survive

Kevin Tong is an illustrator working in Los Angeles. This poster is as beautiful as it is disturbing, displaying masterful application of colour, illustration and concept. It’s little wonder his prints sell out within minutes of going online.

Dexter

Clip art may be sneered on within the design community, but this poster shows just how creative it can actually be. Enhanced by a vivid colour palette and black background that helps the white outlines pop off the page, It’s cute, kitsch and worthy of any wall.

Market Day

Take a look at the skilful illustration in this example. With influence from Ladybird children’s classics and old-school recipe books it’s wholesome, organic and good enough to eat.

Are there any beautifully designed posters that you’ve found that deserve a mention?

Before the digital age typography was a specialist occupation performed by typesetters.
This showcase reveals how beautiful typography logos are and how they can create a lasting impact.

Before the digital age typography was a specialist occupation performed by typesetters. Today, it appears ink costs and paper sizes produce limitations for designers. The fast paced digital age has allowed designers from all walks of life to experiment and produce highly creative logo designs.

Creative logos do not need to be made with pictures; a typographic logo has a unique and intricate effect which expresses the nature of your company beautifully. Most typographic logos are used to represent big brand names such as Coca-Cola and IBM

In order to demonstrate the best typographical design it’s important to keep the number of elements to a minimum. Using one or two typefaces with single colour design will keep the logo unified. Changing the text size, bolding and italicising the font will add emphasis. This type of emphasis can influence a viewer’s response emotionally; great typography can literally stick in the mind of the viewer and helps to increase the number of people who return back to the brand/website.

A typography logo is quirky, has great impact and displays creativity. A typography logo does not need to be complicated; in fact a simple design is often the most memorable. The showcase below reveals how beautiful typography logos are and how they can create a lasting impact.

Joe Murtagh is an imaginative artist living in Liverpool, whose high-energy work is a contemporary combination of the digital and the traditional.
Joe’s art education was traditional enough, studying Art & Design on a two year BTEC course, then a Fine Art Degree, where he finally focused on being a figurative sculptor, working with stone and metal.
Joe later moved into teaching art, in schools and colleges, before becoming a web designer, graphic designer, photo retoucher and digital artist.
He uses strong colour to enhance a subject, and likes to experiment with digital software to produce standout images.
His aim is to produce work he hasn’t seen before, purposefully avoiding mimicking his contemporaries.
He is inspired and influenced by art history, movies, comic books, graffiti, music….questioning everything modern life has to offer, good and bad.

For more Information about Joe visit his portfolio at

Society27 and Italian illustrator David Sossella Crowd-Produce Series of Designer T-Shirts

Community driven decisions shape project “TOGETHER”

To push the boundaries of a common product and involvement of their followers, creative community Society27 manifest the path of co-creation in their new project “TOGETHER”

This is an independent undertaking in which Society27 fans and artists are interconnected in the creative process. Everything started with a contest commissioned by Society27 for an illustration that had to express participation and collaboration – the fundamental spirit of this creative community.

The submission of prominent Italian illustrator David Sossella was voted best, he pinpointed the idea with a complex drawing of 27 characters bound together in circular motion.

Archabits, the studio that created the famous wooden shoe box for Society27, stepped in again to create yet another state-of-the-art packaging decision to accommodate the TOGETHER tees. The wooden packaging is a screen printed with Sossella’s illustration on the wooden front and has Society27′s logo pattern on the back. It unfolds to a wall piece showcasing the possibilities of multi-purpose packaging design.

“TOGETHER” is part of Society27′s initiative to inspire and boost creators to work on common online projects that result in real life tangible products. Its purpose is to showcase the concept of giving birth to something in the digital world and then transferring it into real life, with lasting effects on networking, friendship and co-creation ideas.

As part of its community uppbringing, the project continues on Kickstarter.com until 27th ot April.

David Sossella

David Sossella is a prominent young Italian illustrator. Originally from Venice, he now lives in Treviso and is a graphic designer at Manifactory design studio. Lover of traditional Japanese art, he mixes it with Soviet Union elements to bring out one of the most recognizable drawing styles in the world of illustration today.

Society27

Society27 puts people of different skills and crafts together in the creation of community-generated products. Creation process, product and client experience are shared. Creators and users are networked by inspired work and a quality product in limited series. Consumers are creators and members are customers.

Our effort is to create a new form of product-based multinational community. The Society27 idea is to be in constant metamorphosis and create one coherent group of like-minded people, through the things we create.

Welcome to our idea!
